Diamond Light Is Probably Manufactured in Krypton [Lighting]

The Diamond Light by Hiroki Takada has three of the best things I like in lighting design: Weirdness, disco bling bling, and the possibility of making photons bounce until they create a massive laser capable of vaporizing the planet.

The Diamond Light is made of mirrors and a 20 watt LED. [Takada Design via Mocoloco]

Gokivo Drops Monthly Rate to $5/Month [IPhone Apps]

Possibly in response to the amazingly low price of Fullpower’s MotionX GPS (stay tuned for full review), Networks In Motion has reduced the monthly rate of its Gokivo iPhone app to $4.99. [iTunes Link]

Parody: Weta’s Special Effects Technology Creates Green Screen Boobage [Movies]

Something fun (though NSFW) to end your work week: Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop has provided amazing effects for movies like Lord of the Rings, but can it green-screen naughty bits for indie-film makers? This mock behind-the-scenes look answers that question.

With the over-tanned Access ET intro and all, I thought this may have been real for a half a second. Then I saw it was written and directed by Joe Swanberg, an indie-film maker known for his preoccupation with digital technology and non-simulated sex scenes. Oh, and it was on: [Funnyordie]

Why We Love Wires Too [Wires]

Oh wires. Technologizer loves you, but we thought we’d tell you why we love you too.

Their reasoning: The Eye-Fi wireless transfer card only works sometimes, wireless headsets are worse than wired ones, USB power is much better than battery power and Wi-Fi access points aren’t very stable.

Although we don’t agree with all of them (convenience trumps quality in a few occasions, like running on batteries instead of being tethered all the time), we agree with the idea.

In our case, we run wired Ethernet whenever possible—not only is the latency better, but transferring and streaming over Gigabit Ethernet is a crapload faster and more stable than doing it over even 802.11n. As for wireless power, the new thing that’s getting popular with WildCharge and the Palm Pre’s Touchstone, that’s a case of convenience trumping practicality. When something’s charging, it’s not going anywhere, so it might as well be plugged in (with wires). And wireless charging is less efficient than wired charging, so your electric bill will be higher.

There are other cases like preferring a wired phone for a landline instead of a cordless one, but the gist of it is that we like to go wired whenever possible. With wireless not quite there in the convenience vs. performance battle, there are still a lot of cases where wires win. [Technologizer]

Dell’s Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition oozing out now for $329

If you’ve ever had a yearning for a slime covered netbook, today’s your lucky day. Dell’s Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition — which is absolutely SpongeBob-approved — is now up for order starting at $329. As for specs, it’s pretty much a standard Mini 10v underneath, with a 10.1-inch (1,024 x 600 resolution) display, Windows XP Home, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a GMA950 graphics set, WiFi, 3-cell battery, 1.3 megapixel webcam and a totally played 1.6GHz Atom processor. Oh, and a slimed lid and palm rest, which are likely the one two aspects that truly matter here.

[Thanks, Simon]

Acer’s Android Netbook Arriving In Time For the Eggnog, Chrome OS Not So Much [NetBooks]

There isn’t a lack of Android MIDs and smartphones these days, and soon there will be an Android netbook on the market. Acer will release its dual-boot Android, Windows XP Aspire One in time for the holidays.

The Android has been out of the bag on the Aspire One, but now we know that you should be able to purchase it by November. It probably won’t be all that much cheaper than the current 10-inch Aspire One (which goes for about $350) since it still runs Windows and will have comparable specs.

And while Chrome OS has been rumored to hit some Chinese netbooks as early as next month, that is surely not the case for the major netbook manufacturers. Acer, Lenovo and MSI all report that they have no plans to bring Chrome OS netbooks to market in the near future. That makes sense to us, since Google originally said it wouldn’t be released until the second half of 2010. In the meantime we will be living with a crapload of Android (especially on Acer phones). Red Epic Used to Shoot Sexiest Woman Alive, Kate Beckinsale, at 5K Resolution [Red]

Megan Fox may have been sexy enough to use the 3K resolution Red Epic video camera to shoot with, but the sexiest woman alive needs 5K. Kate Beckinsale is an extra 2K sexier than Megan Fox.

It’s technologically interesting since, with both the 3K and the 5K Red cameras, they’re able to take video and strategically take out frames to use as stills. This makes it a lot easier on the photographer since he doesn’t need to know, intuitively, when the best few seconds are to snap a stream of shots—he can just point the thing and tell Kate to be sexy.

It’s too bad for Kate though, because in order to crown a new Sexiest Woman Alive next year, Esquire will have to have her put down. [Esquire]
