Low Cost Robot On Wheels Can Spy Baddies, Paint Them to Death [Robobuggy]

ROMP—or Remotely Operated Mobile Platform—is a poor man’s version of an iRobot battlefield bot. Instead of fancy tracks and miniaturized sensors, these ROMPs seem more like sophisticated all-terrain RC cars rigged with consumer cameras. Until you meet the older brother, of course, the weaponized WROMP with its big gun on top. In the words of its creator, Chris Rogers:

[The WROMP] is a weaponized version of the Remotely Operated Mobile Platform. The operator can “drive” the vehicle and fire the weapon although it is out of visual range. WROMP can also be used for reconnaissance and bomb investigation and remote detonation

As you can see, the weapon in this case is just a paintball machine gun. Enough for me, although Chris says the platform has been designed for any use, “including remote surveillance, security patrolling and bomb investigation.” The system uses an audio/video system linked to an VR headset for control, aiming, and firing. Special Forces Fireproof Modular Glove System Now For Normal Rich Guys Too [Clothing]

Before you ask “why would I need fireproof gloves?” it’s just one feature of this glove system from Outdoor Research that’s in use right now by the military in Iraq, including special forces chaps. They can also handle extremely cold and hot environments, and the outer layer is made of a specially abrasion-resistant “wolverine” material. And that just sounds cool. The inner layer is of super-stretchy nomex-based stuff that’s super-stretchy for an ideal fit, and the whole idea is that you mix and match internal and external components to three or four layers to meet your needs. They’d better be some specialist needs though: these babies’ll cost you $1,100. [Wired]

Rhys Millen Trying to Backflip a Truck Again, Releases Video of Spine-Breaking Botched Attempt [Natural Selection At Work]

rhysmillen.jpgIf you’re a longtime Giz reader, you may remember that on last New Years Eve, Rhys Millen was supposed to perform a backflip in a truck on live TV. One problem: he broke a bunch of his vertebrae during a practice run and had to cancel. Well, he’s gonna give it another go this year, and to get you all amped up for it, Red Bull has released the video of his crash. Want to see a dude do half a backflip in a pickup truck? Follow me, ye of strong stomachs.

Yep, about what you expected, eh? Here’s hoping he’s learned a thing or two during those painful months of rehabilitation.

Winsome Leaf Keychain Speakers are Almost Certainly Irritating in Real Life [Speakers]

At first glance, this leaf from Bird Electron doesn’t seem like such a bad idea: Provide people with a small, unamplified, discreet speaker that can hook up to pretty much any MP3 player, wrap it in a cute little leafy shell and clip it to a keychain. But then, please, consider the uses. When can’t you just give you friends an earbud to share a song? When you’re 13, on a bus with five friends, all of whom are on a pretty hard Chingy kick. That’s when. Japan can keep this one. [Akihabara]

OrbLive 2.0 iPhone App Keeps Your Devices File- and Embarrasment-Free [IPhone App]

Today, the media streaming service Orb announced their official iPhone application, OrbLive 2.0, allowing you to stream your media files across multiple devices via 3G, EDGE or Wi-Fi. The last incarnation of OrbLive was launched before the App Store was introduced; thus requiring a jailbroken iPhone. The official application allows for a more intuitive and streamlined experience instead of the traditional browser interface. It’ll save you time from syncing all of those files that you claim don’t exist buried in the dim recesses of your hard drive, giving you just a lil’ more “special time.” Eh, let’s try not to forget special time doesn’t mean it’s “share-with-everyone-around-me” time, shall we? Not unless it involves physical interaction. [MarketWatch]

This is What Fellating a Microphone Sounds Like (NSFW) [Nsfw]

The age old question of “what a microphone would sound like if it were fellated by a woman” has now been answered by this lovely lady (Wojciech Kosma?), as she performs at an art opening. She’s been taking her act all around the world, as evidenced by her previous videos doing exactly the same thing, which we’ve taken the courtesy of embedding after the jump. Look at it as a PSA; kids now have no need to fellate a recording instrument to hear what it sounds like. Other gadgets though, like Bluetooth headsets and AC adapters, are still up for grabs.
