Microsoft to Develop Voice-Recognition iPhone App Via Subsidiary Tellme [Worlds, Colliding]
Voice recognition is one if the iPhone gaping-est of holes, but it will soon be plugged by none other than Microsoft. But before you look forward to putting your multitouching fingers all over those glorious nine letters on your iPhone screen, know that MS is only indirectly involved via Tellme, a company they acquired in early 2007 which has a similar app for Blackberries already. But it’s a start. And the app looks like it would be pretty useful.
Press a button to start recording and say what you’re searching for—the name of a business, for instance, and Tellme will search and locate matches in your vicinity. Great for when you can’t stop and type in locations manually. Unfortunately the app doesn’t appear to access your contacts for good ol’ standard voice-dialing (at least in the BlackBerry version), so that’s something we’ll still have to wait for. Walmart Shutting Down Music Store DRM Servers, Umpteenth Reminder to Not Buy DRM’d Content [Walmart]
Like Yahoo and MSN before them, Walmart is turning off its DRM servers on Oct. 9, effectively putting any DRM’d songs you bought from them into a cold stasis they’ll never wake up from, since they’ll become totally unmovable unless you circumvent the DRM. Walmart went through this earlier with their video store, though it didn’t matter since no one bought anything from it. Walmart’s music store is DRM-free now, though I doubt that’s any consolation to people who actually paid for music that’s now nigh useless.

Important Information About Your Digital Music Purchases
We hope you are enjoying the increased music quality/bitrate and the improved usability of Walmart’s MP3 music downloads. We began offering MP3s in August 2007 and have offered only DRM (digital rights management) -free MP3s since February 2008. As the final stage of our transition to a full DRM-free MP3 download store, Walmart will be shutting down our digital rights management system that supports protected songs and albums purchased from our site.
If you have purchased protected WMA music files from our site prior to Feb 2008, we strongly recommend that you back up your songs by burning them to a recordable audio CD. By backing up your songs, you will be able to access them from any personal computer. This change does not impact songs or albums purchased after Feb 2008, as those are DRM-free.
Beginning October 9, we will no longer be able to assist with digital rights management issues for protected WMA files purchased from Walmart.com. If you do not back up your files before this date, you will no longer be able to transfer your songs to other computers or access your songs after changing or reinstalling your operating system or in the event of a system crash. Your music and video collections will still play on the originally authorized computer.
Thank you for using Walmart.com for music downloads. We are working hard to make our store better than ever and easier to use.

Mobile Phone Subscriptions to Reach 4 Billion by Year’s End [Cellphones]
The UN’s International Telecommunications Union announced Friday that mobile phone subscriptions will reach 4 billion by the end of 2008, far more than half of the estimated 6.7 billion total world population. Of course, there are some, like John Mayer, who throw off that number by having more than one cell phone (damn you, Mayer!) but it’s still a huge milestone. The bump from last year’s total of 3.3 billion is primarily due to emerging countries like China, India, and Russia, as well as lower prices and lots of healthy competition between carriers. Leaps and bounds have been made with Sylvain Calinon’s robotic portrait artist since we first caught a glimpse of this amazing AI being — and no, we’re not just referring to the stylish beret and mustache. Now dubbed “Salvador DaBot”, the portraitist has developed far more advanced conversation skills, along with a voice that sounds a lot less like Steven Hawking. We kinda miss that feather pen he was sporting before, but his movement’s a lot more natural now and his new marker seems to have helped his drawing style — similar to old-school comic art. See this awesome little guy in action after the break.

NES Controller Socket Lets You Control Your Mods with Nostalgia [Mods]
Parallax has just released their NES controller socket to the delights of modders everywhere. Instead of forcing them to chop up an old NES to get the 7-pin socket, Parallax has made it available for only $2 on their site. The NES controller would be great for all kinds of little projects, from robots to old-school gaming devices, and we’re really looking forward to seeing what inventive modders can do with the humble and much-loved controller. ASUS doles out gold and blue Eee PCs
Filed under: Laptops
With the introduction of the well-received N10, we thought maybe — just maybe — ASUS was moving beyond its disgusting obsession with mutilating the Eee brand. Instead, we’re now faced with fresh hues of two old faces: the blue 901A and the gilded 900A. Looks as if all the internals have remained the same, though there’s no indication what kind of premium (if any) you’ll have to pay for your color of choice.
[Thanks, Sascha]
