Doing the math on that $99 Inspiron Mini deal
Filed under: Laptops

If you’re anything like us, the idea of a $99 Inspiron Mini 9 was enough to make you seriously consider picking up a new full-featured Dell laptop, but since the math is a little confusing given Dell’s shady history and the number of promotions on its site, we thought we’d break it down for you. Essentially, Dell’s charging close to full price for the large machine in order to absorb the cost of the Mini — so while a $1,259 Studio 15 with a 1.86GHz processor, 3GB of RAM, a 250GB drive, and a 3 year warranty goes for $699 on Dell’s fall deals page, it’s $1098 with a Mini. Hey, the difference is just about the Mini 9’s $349 list price, isn’t it? Same story with the other Studio 15 and XPS M1330 / M1530 configurations that apply for the $99 Mini deal — you can find cheaper deals, but they’re all about $300 - $400 less than the CTO price, so adding in a Mini 9 essentially washes out. So much for that hot two laptop $700 impulse buy — we’d say it only makes sense to pull the trigger on this if you’re actually in the market for a new full-featured machine. Let us know if you manage to work the numbers any differently — our credit card hasn’t gone too far.
[Thanks, Matt]

Acer Aspire One’s 6-cell is a whole lot cheaper bundled
Filed under: Laptops
$119 for a battery to beef up a $380 computer? No thanks, Acer, but how about we nab ourselves a $400 Aspire One with the 6-cell already onboard? Yeah, we like the sound of that. Now we’ve got ASUS, MSI and Acer posing with 6-cells, when are you going to get on board with sexy, Dell?
[Thanks, Jeremy B.]

Sprint HTC Touch Diamond Out on Sept. 14 for $250 [Touch Diamond]
Now that the WSJ has had their run with it, Sprint has confirmed that the HTC Touch Diamond will be out on Sept. 14 for $250 with a two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate. Cheaper than we’d heard, but it would’ve been nice to hit the $199 mark. [PC Mag]

NLighten IT7202 72-inch Touchscreen HDTVs Put Google Earth At Your Fingertips [CEDIA 2008]
Rear-projection may be deader than dead as far as the biggies are concerned, but the folks at nLighten are intent to squeeze a bit more life out of these 72-inch 1080p DLP sets by sticking an infrared camera inside next to the light source that detects cursor points from an IR-tipped pen, allowing for a simple (no multitouch) touchscreen interface. It can act as a standard Windows mouse allowing for 1080p touchscreen Google Earth, or any other app.
The 72-inch IR-pen screen is priced at $3,000, and a similar version that uses camera triangulation from cameras mounted on the top of the bezel for actual finger touch control will set you back $4,000. As you can see in the video, the finger-touch seems to be a bit finicky, but the IR pen control is smooth as silk. [CEDIA 2008]

IT6002 and IT7202’s large touch-sensitive displays invite your audiences to focus on the presentation materials and retain information easier. h&72inch TouchScreenDLP riorTechnologies Collaborating large screen high definition displays and touch function, nLighten’s new DT7200, 72 inch Finger Touch screen DLP Display, and IT6002 and IT7202, 60 inch and 72 inch Pen Touch screen DLP Displays, offer fast and precise response to the movement and can be enhanced by featuring nLighten’s software solution for interactive eboard application. “Touch screens are an efficient and intuitive way to access and interact with on-display information, and appeal to a wide variety of users and applications”, said nLighten President Jack Kuo. “The technology of finger touch compliments nLighten’s standard display line ups.” “We recognize the increase demand for touch screen capability with large screen size displays from our channel partners. “ nLighten is showing all three True High Definition Touch Screen DLP Rear Projection Displays at CEDIA EXPO 2008 booth #826, September 4 ~7, 2008, Denver, CO.

120GB Zune Purchased at Fry’s for $250: Unboxed for Good Measure [Zune]
It appears that at least one lucky shopper at a Fry’s in Atlanta managed to get their hands on a 120GB Zune before its official release, and there are even unboxing pics (after the break) and a receipt to prove it. If you look closely, it rang up at $250—backing up recent rumors about the price. [Thanks Joe!]

French Train Operator Trials RFID Payment Card with USB Connection [RFID]
No matter the fuss about RFID hacking, France’s national train operator SNCF is trialing a single-user RFID payment system for journeys on its network. The Weneo card is no flimsy card with a simple embedded chip however: it’s a thick gizmo with 4GB aboard and a USB plug. Shoving it into a PC takes the user directly to SNCF’s website, where they can charge up the card’s credit. Sounds all very groovy, but since the card also contains a chunk of personal data, like status as a student or senior citizen or “amount of money the cardholder has available for purchases” (why the heck is that there?) it strikes me as something that’d be pretty worrying to lose/get hacked. On trial for 1,000 users currently. [RFIDJournal via Nowhereelse—in French]

CEDIA 2008 Infiltrated: Booths Under Construction, A Few Tidbits Already Powered Up [CEDIA 2008]
We snuck in (or casually moseyed in, actually) to CEDIA’s main show floor, which is still being set up for tomorrow’s opening, and we’ve learned a few things in advance of any announcements.
The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser.Sony’s Motionflow wall which was in the process of being powered up had a 240Hz set like the 200Hz Bravia we saw at IFA (240Hz NTSC = 200Hz PAL), which indicates Sony is bringing some or all of its Euro IFA goods (including, hopefully, the super-thin ZX1) stateside. We also spied a Sharp X-Series Aquos all fired up in their booth (shown in the image above), which very well may be the WHDI wireless set announced in Asia a few months back, which indicates Sharp is pushing their thin LCDs even harder, and in larger sizes. We also learned that it must really suck to have to vacuum tradeshow floors after setup. Hit the gallery for more shots of the majors’ booths.
