Forget those naff spy pens: This spy camera watch from Brando may actually be a decent spying gizmo. For example… can you see the camera in the photo of it? It’s in the whorl of the numeral 2, and the watch is pretty convincing. It only shoots 352 x 288 pixel AVIs, but it does carry 2GB aboard, so that should be good for a whole bunch of sneaky vids, and its rechargeable batteries get juice from a USB connection. Just cover up that USB port with a sticker or plug of some kind so it’s less obvious, and spy away. Presumably it also tells the time, but that’s curiously not mentioned on Brando’s web page. Filed under the “good thing we tried it out first” department is this recent test of Shuttle-replacement Orion’s parachute re-entry system. Based on the same system used for Apollo, the group of eight parachutes deploys after re-entry, ensuring the Orion capsule glides down back to terra firma for a pillow-soft landing. That’s what’s supposed to happen, anyway.
Here, the initial chutes that positions the craft for the main chutes’ test (so, not a part of the final system) failed shortly after being dropped from a C-17 cargo plane at 25,000 feet. As you can see, it all goes downhill from there, terminating in “a landing that severely damaged the test mock-up.” Well said, NASA—I’m guessing any test dummies inside for pressure measurements had to be scraped off the desert floor with a knife. A knife, some rope and a decent flashlight. When it comes right down to it, these are tools that a guy can really use. As for the latter of the three, a good choice may be these new “Daylite” superbright torches from Duracell. Besides a sturdy all-weather design, the Daylites feature TrueBeam technology that uses “both a lens and a reflector to capture and project up to 100 percent of the light,” which they claim significantly enhances brightness. Plus, a 3:1 zoom eliminates the annoying dark spot typical of most flashlights.
Duracell will be offering the Daylite in three varieties: the 80 lumens AAA / AA versions (both $25) and the powerful 160 lumens CR123 version ($35) beginning this month at drug and hardware stores. Duracell seems to be aiming at the MagLite market with the Daylites, but it remains to be seen whether the performance justifies the price tag. [Duracell]
We know it’s been a tough few days since the last Eee PC launch, but ASUS has now thankfully come through with four more ever so slightly different models to feed your questionable appetite, this time for Taiwan. Those include the 1000HD XP, 904HD XP, 901 XP and 900 XP (16G), each of which, obviously, run XP, and at least two of which (the 901 and 900) come in some of the same eye-catching colors that Korea got a taste of the other day. Somewhat curiously, only the 901 XP is listed as having an Atom processors, while the others are simply described as packing an “Intel Mobile” processor. Otherwise, you can expect the usual range of specs found on countless similar models, with prices coming in at the local equivalent of $444 to $539.
Apparently Intel is on a bit of a roll already at this year’s IDF. After showcasing and talking up a number of new products, including (but not limited to) the lap-destroying mobile Quad Core Extreme CPUs (as featured in Lenovo’s vicious W700), new switchable graphics solutions that allow on-the-fly toggling between integrated and discrete graphics, and even more talk about forthcoming WiMAX options. What really got everyone’s eye, however, was a slide they teased with at the end of Mobility Group VP / GM Dadi Perlmutter’s presentation of a mystery touchscreen tablet with the ominous question “What is this?” and a promise to reveal the goods tomorrow morning. Call us dangerously psychotic, but it looks like a clunky medical accessory to us. Paging Dr. Design to Intel’s R&D lab, STAT.
At the end of an otherwise tepid presentation at the Intel Developer Forum today, Dadi Perimutter, head of Intel’s Mobility Group, dropped a bomb (via PowerPoint) on his audience: a mysterious tablet device, which could well be the next generation of the Classmate OLPC competitor. If that is the case, the OLPC might really have something to worry about. Sugar, the “revolutionary” Linux-based OS originally developed for the OLPC, is already in development for the Classmate project, not to mention that fact that this new picture indicates that Intel may have taken a few of Nick Negroponte’s visions for the OLPC XO-2 to heart, and possibly to production.
The current Classmate PC fits a traditional form-factor and has been moderately successful, if not dominant, in its intended market. Without a truly unique design or an adequately modified (or new) operating system, the first and second generations of the Classmate amounted to little more than a very cheap laptop. Switching to a tablet-style design and relying on nontraditional input methods could push the new Classmate (or whatever this is) over the edge as the de facto digital teaching device for the developing world. Hammacher Schlemmer’s Digital Camera Swim Mask integrates an underwater digital camera into a swim mask—two things that have belonged together ever since Man decided that Woman should wear little to no clothing when they’re in the water. The on-board 5-megapixel camera goes down to 15 feet and can take up to 30 pictures in its 16MB memory. You can expand that with a microSD card (no size limitation specified) in order to record more than 52 seconds of video as well. There’s an LED inside the mask that tells you which mode you’re in, but the whole thing requires two AAA batteries to operate. It’s only $99, and can be used in snorkeling or just at the pool. Ask any animation modeler about the “uncanny valley,” and you’re sure to get at least a grimace, if not a groan. Said term describes the long-standing barrier which refers to the perception that “animation looks less realistic as it approaches human likeness.” Image Metrics is hoping that a newfangled approach used to create Emily (pictured) will finally allow animations to look more like humans and less like “corpses.” As you could probably surmise, the secret is the tech’s ability to survey and replicate the most subtle of movements, though even Raja Koduri, chief technology officer in graphics at AMD, doesn’t see the line between reality and fiction being blurred before 2020. We’ll see what Emily’s posse has to say about that.
RIM, why have you forsaken us? With no date or price yet for the US, Rogers has just confirmed that the BlackBerry Bold will launch in RIM’s backyard on Thursday. They didn’t release pricing info, but a leaked flyer on Friday that looked pretty damn legit pegged it at $399. Since it’s launching ’round the world by the end of this week, odds are we’ll be getting US launch details soonish. [Reuters]
