Moisture Vaporators Spotted In Buenos Aires [Moisture Vaporators]

The Buenos Aires government would have done the late Owen Lars proud with their newly installed $5 million Intelligent Monitoring Towers. Designed to collect information about the city’s air and noise quality, we can easily see these 42 towers being at home collecting moisture on a dusty planet in a certain binary star system far, far away. The towers measure cobalt, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide, benzene and humidity (just like on Tatooine!).

When the program is fully functional by the end of 2008, city officials expect to have a complete map of the environmental quality of the city. They’ll use that info to influence bus routes and improve overall quality of life for citizens. No word yet on whether that will require any power converters from Tosche Station. [Treehugger]

Seriously, this steampunk thing is getting out of hand. Like with this Casio G-Shock G8100A-5 wristwatch. They took a Casio watch, slapped on some bronze paint, and now everyone and their steam-powered mechanical dog is calling it steampunk. Enough! If you’re going to charge $100 for a bronze-colored watch and have people start calling it steampunk, it had damn well better come powered by a miniature lever-pulling version of K.W. Jeter. Color us stumped and incredibly excited. We’ve discovered this totally useless yet endlessly amazing DVD player / Terminator head out in the wilds of the internet, but finding any information deeper than people exclaiming “this is awesome” is, in a word, difficult. Look, we’re not saying that we want to find the company that makes these, order 100 of them, rip out their guts and replace them with those electronic rat brains, swap the eyes for stereoscopic cameras, tack on Darth Vader-esque voice boxes, and then mount them to the unkillable bodies of an army of robotic warriors we’ve been building, but… uh, well… okay you got us.

MSI Winds said to be shipping without Synaptic touchpads

If the increasing number of posts on the MSIWind.net forums are any indication, it looks like at least some MSI Winds are now shipping out with Sentilic touchpads in place of the more-functional Synaptic ones that have been standard issue until now. Among other things, the Sentilic touchpads don’t allow for horizontal and vertical side scrolling (instead offering just corner clicking), and they apparently don’t let you turn off the tap-to-click feature, which seems to have caused plenty of frustation among those that have received a Wind from this latest batch. For its part, MSI only seems to be offering an updated driver to anyone that contacts them complaining of problems which, not surprisingly, apparently doesn’t do much to improve things.

Silent Alarm Clock Wakes You Up With Good Vibrations, Smooths Roommate Relations [Silence Is Golden]

Back when I was in college, one of my most frustrating experiences involved a roommate in my dormitory apartment who mistakenly believed that she would be able to wake up daily for her 8:30am lecture series. ESA is showing off its new “ExoMars” bots, Bruno and Bradley, who are being prepped for a 2015 mission to the red planet. The six-wheeled bots are being designed to carry a significant scientific payload, oriented around the search for life, but won’t slouch in the maneuverability department, with six independently rotating wheels. In addition to independent movement, the wheels can also be locked into “wheel walking mode,” where treacherous terrain can be traversed by crawling instead of rolling over it. On the AI front, Bruno and Bradley have significantly better AI than their progenitors, being able to plot their own courses and therefore cover more ground. The mission will involve traversing the planet and drilling six feet into the ground for soil samples, which the rover will be able to examine in its on-board laboratory. The only problem now is funding: ExoMars is looking to cost about double the 650 million Euros initially approved for the project in 2005, and there’s no guarantee (yet) that the extra cash will be there when they need it.

Athlon 64 2000+ at 8-watts outperforms, draws less energy than Atom

AMD’s going through some rough times, no doubt about it, but for fanboys of the CPU maker (wait, do CPU fanboys still exist?) here’s your feel-good story of the year. The always-thorough Tom’s Hardware has pit Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom 230 processor against AMD’s Athlon 64 2000+, and the results just might surprise you. The 1GHz Athlon (with a core voltage of 0.90 volts and a power draw of just 8 watts) managed to best the aforementioned Atom in both energy consumption and processing power tests. The gurus at Tom’s credited the more modern 790G platform and the highly efficient K8 architecture as big players in the Athlon’s strong showing, finally deeming said chip “more economical, faster and quieter” than the Atom. We know you’re in disbelief — good thing there are 14 pages of proof waiting in the read link.

WM Experts says that the AT&T-branded HTC Touch Pro we caught last week is probably going to be known as the HTC Fuze, and that it’ll be out “sooner rather than later.” Make sense, given that the thing’s already floating around, even though the name doesn’t, since it sounds more like an XTREME energy drink than a phone.
