ADVERTISEMENT: We still don’t see the big picture surrounding Smallville director David Nutter’s latest series “Scarlet,” but industry insiders are promising us that it will be the biggest thing to hit TV since, well…the TV. Check it out.

Japan’s oldest “modern” robot — the 10-foot, 6-inch GakuTenSoku — has been awakened in Japan. Gone are the inflatable rubber tubes of the original 1928 android build by biologist Makoto Nishimura. The bot now tilts its head, moves his eyes, smiles, and puffs out his cheeks thanks to a $200,000, computer-controlled, pneumatic-servo makeover. While nothing compared to his modern offspring, GakuTenSoku still manages to creep us the hell out. On display at the renovated Osaka Science Museum starting July 18th. Video after the break.

Actual Video of Drunk Darth Vader Attacking Jedi [Star Wars]

Remember the case of the drunkard dressing up as Vader and beating some Jedi-wannabees with a crutch? Here’s the vid. I can’t believe someone got charged with assault for this. Footage of the actual attack just takes all the juice away from the tale. I mean, in the old days, you had to take off someone’s arm or head, or scorch their Jedi robes at least. Kids these days. Limited edition Renault Sandero to boast Nokia branding, N95

Nothing shows your complete and unwavering devotion to a handset maker like buying an ultra-rare vehicle with its logos on there, wouldn’t you agree? Those vigorously nodding up and down (well, those vigorously nodding up and down in Brazil) can get set to grab a limited edition Renault Sandero, which will come “fully equipped with Nokia’s navigation system and [undisclosed] car add-ons.” The super-special Sandero will come stocked with an N95 and cost around €17,650 ($27,693), but you’d better hurry, as only 1,000 of these niche motorcars are being built. It’s like Nokia heard your cries for letting the chance to nab one of those co-branded Twingos slip through your too-busy-texting thumbs or something.

Windows Sales Way Down, Microsoft Makes Less Money (Vs. Last Year) [Microsoft]

microsoftearnings.jpgHere are the meaty bits in the cold platter of numbers that is Microsoft’s quarterly earnings report. Windows sales are way down (the client division, which makes Windows, saw sales drop by 24 percent vs. last year). Office is doing alright, but they’re losing their ass on online services. The entertainment division (Zune and Xbox) is balling, with revenue up 68 percent, making Xbox and Zune profitable for almost a year now. But bottom line, Microsoft’s income was down 11 percent from last year. [Microsoft, WSJ via Valleywag]

Dell rumored to be selling XP until 2012, Ballmer says MS can “wake up smarter”

Windows XP has a date with destiny scheduled for June 30, but it looks like the plucky OS just isn’t ready to go: Ultraportable OEMs will be able to preload XP until “one year after the general availability of Windows 7,” whenever that is, and now we’re hearing reports that Dell’s telling customers it’ll sell XP on professional systems until 2012. The Dell thing is just a rumor for now, but what’s Steve Ballmer doing telling reporters that although XP is EOL, “if customer feedback varies, we can always wake up smarter” and extend XP sales? Um, Steve? Customers have been feeding back like crazy and Microsoft has kind of ignored them, remember? Maybe it’s time for a quick nap.

Update:
That was pretty funny for a totally unintentional typo, wasn’t it?

LG’s 5 megapixel KF750 with DivX rebranded Secret, shhh

LG’s KF750 was just announced official-like by the non-rioting folks at Lucky Goldstar. With it, we get the official specs courtesy of, uh, Photography Blog. Why is a site for digital photogs carrying a cellphone press release, you ask? Easy, this one’s got a 5 megapixel camera with face recognition and the ability to shoot DivX video at 120fps. A member of LG’s Black Label series, the 11.8-mm slider is the thinnest 5 megapixel cameraphone on the market. Unfortunately the press release is heavy on fluff and light on specs so we can only tell you that it’ll also be sporting an auto-rotating touch-screen display, suite of mobile Google apps, and Bluetooth when it makes its European debut sometime this year, presumably, for an unknown price.

Update: A few more details are rolling in: 2.4-inch display, haptic feedback, and available in May.
