Keepin’ it real fake, part CXV: CECT T5 T32 WinMo 6 iPhone clone doesn’t try to hide it

We’re sorry, but we can no longer summon any sort of enthusiasm for iPhone knockoffs. Who cares if they’re running Windows Mobile 6 with a perfect clone of the iPhone interface, plus GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and whatever other tech flavor of the month; the form factor just kills it for us at this point. Plus at $265 wholesale, the CECT T5 T32 from China ain’t no bargain. Let’s try a bit harder, people!

MIT is really taking its robotics program to a whole new level with its “MDS” platform, which stands for Mobile, Dexterous and Social. The flagship bot so far is Nexi, who certainly fits the bill, albeit with an extra dab of creepy. The bot stands on a Segway-esque wheel base, has articulated arms and hands, and can convey a wide range of emotion with that pasty white face. Nexi has a computer on board to manage sensors and instinctual responses, while it offloads the heavy duty AI work to a stationary computer over the network. MIT’s eventual goal is to have Nexi and others participate in Socially Situated Robot Learning — observing and interacting with humans to figure out how best to integrate with them. Don’t worry Nexi, we like you for you. Video is after the break.

CTL’s 2go PC Netbook variant gets official, headed for Amazon

Intel’s just gotten official about its new Netbook platform (a.k.a. Classmate 2), and CTL has now followed suit with official word on the first Netbook that’ll actually be available: the 2go PC. While there’s no surprises with the specs, CTL did drop word that the education-minded laptop will be available for sale to the general public from Amazon (though not just yet) with prices ranging from $300 to $500 (as opposed to the firm $400 price tag we heard earlier). Coinciding with the official launch, the folks at Laptop Magazine have also let loose both a brief hands-on and a full review of the device, both of which find the laptop to be an improvement over the original Classmate PC, with its rugged design, long battery life and lightweight chassis in particular earning it high marks. The keyboard, however, is apparently even more cramped than the one on the Eee PC, so anyone outside of the intended kid market will likely want to look elsewhere. Be sure to hit up the appropriate link below for a video of the laptop as well.

Free Flight of the Conchords MP3 Today [Dealzmodo]

img2_mel.jpgScary factoid: on my recent vacation, I combed my hair funny as a joke. My wife freaked out a bit, saying that I looked like Murray Hewitt. She was right, so I called her “Brit” for the remainder of the trip. (Unfortunately, she looks nothing like Bret McClegnie.) On the plus side, today you can download Flight of the Conchords’ “Ladies of the World” MP3 for 100% free on CNET. You don’t remember that song from the series? Then you’re fired, reader. Hit the jump for a reminder and reapply to Gizmodo through the tips line.

UPDATE
: Business Time is available free as well.

Verizon Promises In-Home Cell Boosters This Year, But For How Much? [Cellphones]

Airvana_Femtocells.jpgFemtocell, femtocell, femtocell. Get used to it, because it’s a word you’ll be hearing a lot of from now on. Yesterday, Verizon Wireless promised to offer broadband-connected mini cell towers (yep, femtocells) to customers in 2008. We’re told that products such as the EV-Do model just introduced by Motorola and Airvana are intended for home use, not just in offices. There will be a cost of some kind for the hardware, possibly along the same lines as your monthly cable-box fee. The question is, how much more will you pay to get guaranteed cell voice and data reception in your home? [AP]

iPhone overheats while docked, fight for replacement begins

Not even a month after three iPods got all hot and bothered on separate occasions, along comes images showing that even Apple’s iPhone isn’t immune to melting itself. Purportedly, the handset was purchased from Carphone Warehouse in December, but was never activated for one reason or another. Just this week, the owner’s son slapped it in a dock with intentions of activating, walked downstairs to catch the last few minutes of Magnum, P.I. and returned to his room to find a “stupidly hot” iPhone which had already melted in some parts and had its screen cracked from the reaction. Not surprisingly, he’s currently in the middle of a runaround trying to get someone to remedy the issue, but thankfully no Earthlings, carpets or IKEA desks were harmed.

Update: Thanks to Logan5’s quick eyes, it appears we’ve discovered a scammer in our midst. Essentially, this bloke posted the real story here noting that the crack (more on that here) actually appeared after it was mishandled and dropped. Haven’t we learned this approach doesn’t work by now?

Straight from AT&T Mobility CEO’s Mouth: 3G iPhone Coming in “Months” [Apple]

Steve-McJobsattceo.jpgWe’re at an AT&T lunch, and AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega just dropped some meaty bits. He had mentioned earlier in the event that he expected all of their smart integrated devices to be 3G in the next couple months. Sascha Segan from PC Mag asked it that included the iPhone. De la Vega responded, “Let me repeat what I said: I think that you’re going to see our integrated devices be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months. That should be clear enough.” Cue fanboy 3G fever! [Giz at CTIA 2008]

Comcast Rolls Out Japan-Fast Cable Internet, But Can You Afford It? [Comcast]

DOCSIS 3.0 is the next-gen cable internet standard that allows crazy fast bandwidth of up to 160Mbps downstream and 120 up. The lucky first city to get a piece of that action from Comcast—which plans to cover 20 percent of its market with the awesome by the end of this year—is St. Paul, Minnesota. Denizens can sign up for the Godzilla pipes starting this week, though the 50Mbps line will cost a whopping $150 a month. And no, it won’t blow you. But, that is some sick bandwidth, equaling Verizon’s FiOS offering (which is only $90 a month). So, is it worth it? How much would you pay? [Bits]

Everex Cloudbook MAX hands-on

Damn, Everex clearly stepped up their game with the Cloudbook MAX. Not that we want to harsh on the original Cloudbook or anything, but this thing is definitely in a different class — and the integrated XOHM WiMAX doesn’t hurt, either. Check out some hands-on shots taken at CTIA below.
