Well, that didn’t take long. Just over a day after The New York Times got all our hopes up with word that complete DS game downloads were headed for the Wii, comes word that the big N’s Reggie Fils-Aime actually said no such thing, and that only DS game demos would be available, as expected. In issuing the correction, Nintendo also confirmed that, like other content that that currently be beamed to the DS, the demos will be erased once the handheld is switched off. Unfortunately, there’s still no word as to when that service might actually be available, with Nintendo only going so far as to say that it’s coming sometime “in the future.”

While Activision and Harmonix bicker over the real reason there’s still some lingering incompatibility between the two, Mad Catz has inked a multi-year licensing agreement with MTV Networks to “produce and distribute game peripherals and other products” for Rock Band. Reportedly, the third-party peripheral maker has secured the rights to “manufacture, market and sell game accessories, including both wired and wireless bass guitars, a drum percussion set bundled with professional quality wooden drum sticks, and a wired microphone.” All in all, we’re stoked to see another player entering the Rock Band hardware game, so here’s to hoping Mad Catz won’t ship out any faulty axes and frail drum pedals during “the first half of 2008.”

With all the Wiimote couplings currently making the rounds, we’re bound to see a few lightsabers out there. Of course, this is where Camy’s Pro Gear Wii Light Swords come into play. The colored plastic Wiimote holders are available in three “ultra bright” colors — including the red “Dark Knight,” which we’re almost positive is a copyright infringement. Nevertheless, the swords will cradle your Wiimote lovingly, with ample room for the IR signal to make its way to your console. Should you desire, you can flip a switch and light up the night sky with your fear-inducing — yet rather stubby — laser blade. Sure, we’ve seen similar, but these come in green. The swords are slated for a May / June release, no word on price.

Designed by Avery Holleman, the Napkin PC is mainly aimed at business users in a group environment. Boasting a modular design and sustainable technology, which includes a single-layer flexible circuit board with an inductive power circuit instead of a traditional battery. Each pen transmits your doodles to the base station which is a PC in disguise. That information gets processed and displayed on the napkin like e-ink paper

This gigantic 50,000-ton “ring-imaging water cerenkov detecto”, located underground at the Kamioka Mozumi mine in japan, is used to detect “neutrinos, proton decay and cosmic rays.” Click here for first picture in gallery.

…clever people built the machine to detect cosmic rays: this is done using the 12′000-ish photomultiplier tubes (extremely sensitive light detectors) visible on all walls of the ‘ultra-purified water-filled’ tank

HardOCP has managed to uncover the first pictures of the NVIDIA GeForc 9800 GX2. It features a 1GB frame buffer, two PCBs, two 65nm GPUs, and 256 stream processors. No word yet on pricing and availability. Click here to view the backside of the card.

HardOCP says the best way to think of the GeForce 9800 GX2 is a 8800 that’s been shrunk down to 65nm and SLI’d onto a “single” card. The card is supposed to be at least 30% faster than a 8800 Ultra, and will apparently support Quad SLI

It might be lagging a bit behind its European cousin, but Neonode is finally committing to bringing its N2 to the States in 2008. The finger-friendly touchscreen device is the follow-on to the N1 — a phone that never even crossed the pond — and features a 2 megapixel camera, expansion via a rather unusual miniSD slot, and mere GPRS data to ferry bytes down from the network. Without 3G or even EDGE, our excitement’s tempered, but we’re still curious to find out how it feels and functions in the hand. Look for availability and carrier agreements (yep, it sounds like someone will be officially offering this — T-Mobile, perhaps?) to be announced in the second quarter.

[Thanks, Kristofer B.]

Samsung’s M110 “Solid” phone is apparently making its way to the UK soon, bringing with it a ruggedized exterior sure to resist even the most violent attacks (or scratching, at least). Aside from the tough exterior the device, it’s actually a fantastically boring GSM phone, featuring EDGE / GPRS data, a 240 x 320 screen, Bluetooth, a VGA camera, FM tuner… and MMS! The Korean electronics-maker claims this phone is the “first ultra durable handset,” which is wildly inaccurate, though the device can apparently withstand shocks, water, and hanging out with Tara Reid for a night. Price is expected to hover somewhere near the £59.99 mark (or about $119), and will be available in the UK on the O2 network soon.

Sling Media’s starting up this year’s CES blitz early (like just about everybody else this year) with the announcement of the Slingbox PRO HD box and SlingPlayer client for BlackBerry cellphones. The PRO HD has the full complement of built-in HD inputs, but will actually pass through and stream out video in HD (1080i, to be specific) in real time, unlike the Solo and PRO (which lack the PRO HD’s more advanced hardware-accelerated encoding, and stream closer to VGA res). And, of course, the BlackBerry client does as it says — you can finally use your strictly-business handheld to watch mobile video on the go. The PRO HD will run you $400 when launched in Q3; BlackBerry will be $30 when it comes out “this year,” if that’s not vague enough for you. Get in line, Sling fans.

rumor-smashed-hulk.jpgNintendo’s just dropped the hammer on the NYT story saying the Nintendo DS will get full versions of downloadable games. Turns out that it’s not true, and they were just thinking of the old DS getting demos via the Wii. The Ninty says these demos will be playable just like a normal game (but won’t have all the content, of course) after you download it, but will be erased once the DS is turned off! [NYT]
