Shockingly enough, Laptop magazine — of all magazines in print today — wanted remind everybody that tonight’s the last night your hard earned (and increasingly devalued) American currency can be exchanged for an OLPC. But they also got a few words out of NickNeg as to how many OLPC units sold in the decidedly successful Give 1 Get 1 program (150,000+, not counting big buyers like Birmingham, Alabama), and why not continue the program indefinitely (”We are a charity and not a business. If we continued it, it would become ’sales’ versus a charitable promotion.”) While we kind of take umbrage with that attitude — isn’t it better, after all, to seed as many machines to underprivileged children as possible under any circumstances you can? — we’re hopeful at least that the gang at OLPC will bring back the G1G1 program next year with their v2 hardware. Hopefully by then some sovereign nations will have actually bought some OLPCs of their own.

We’ve already seen Dell’s new Latitude XT convertible tablet first hand, but those wanting to see just how it stacks up to some of its main competition may want to head over to Nathan’s Daily Grind blog, which has a batch of pics comparing it to Lenovo’s similar (and cheaper) X61T tablet. As we noted ourselves, there are some definite ThinkPad-esque touches to the Dell, and the widescreen touchscreen is certainly welcome, but you’ll have to decide for yourself if it’s worth the $2,500 it’ll cost you — and that’s just for the base configuration.

If you think the market for small, white, Linux-based UMPCs is overcrowded, you’re wrong. Dead wrong. Enter the Taiwanese-made E-Lead Electronic “Noahpad” PC, a tiny little laptop which the company affectionately refers to as a “classmate, roommate, and travelmate.” The system is based on a 1GHz Via Eden CPU, has 512MB of RAM, a 30GB hard drive, a touch-based (rather than tactile) keyboard, and a 7-inch LED-backlit display. The Noahpad comes default with Ubuntu 7.10 installed, though the device is apparently capable of running XP as well — if you just have to. Among the more interesting aspects of the unit are its unique split keyboard (which appears to be where the “Noahpad” touch input is put into action) and flipping / folding hinge design, that — according to the company’s promotional material — will allow you to use the system in all sorts of bizarre ways (see above). The UMPC is set to be unveiled at CES this January, but for now you can hit the via and read links for more info.

There’s a WiMAX shindig coming our way at CES next Monday courtesy of Intel, Sprint and Asus. From the sound of things it’ll primarily be Sprint and Intel letting everyone know how very, very fast WiMAX is — and how ahead of the curve we should know they are on deployment and chipsets — but things will get a little extra interesting when the companies start showing off WiMAX “mobile solutions”: actual devices that actually play around with the new wireless standard. Asus in particular will be one to watch, since it’s showing the sequel to the Eee PC, bedecked in WiMAX garb. That’s as much info as we have at this point, and we’re guessing Asus won’t be launching the new Eee PC in the coming months while the current model is still selling so well, but we’re looking forward to a peek all the same.

Our official Gizmodo Reader of the Year for 2007 is David Bacio, also known as Deputy Sheriff David Bacio. He was one of the runners-up in the Inappropriate Gizmodo Browsing contest, submitting a picture of himself in front of a computer reading Gizmodo while at the station. So why is he the reader of the year? Because some douchebag called up his Sheriff, made a complaint, which ended up in a punishment for him just for being a loyal Giz reader.
In the end, David was determined (by the Sheriff’s department) to have violated county internet policy and the code of conduct. He was also removed from his position, docked pay, and has a written reprimand that will stay in his file for three years. And for what? Taking an innocent picture of himself in front of a computer while on the job—an act that takes less time than going to the bathroom or taking a quick coffee break. We salute you, David, for being a loyal Gizmodo reader even despite the crap we got you into with the contest.
And here’s to our worst Gizmodo reader of the year, the asshole who called up David’s boss to complain. Please escort yourself out. Seriously. We don’t want you here.
